What to look for in Bicycle Parking Racks: |
| The main goal of bicycle parking racks is keeping bicycles secure. With an overwhelmingly vast selection of bicycle rack styles, finding the right rack for your site is a difficult task. It is important to look at all the factor that go into a bicycle parking rack purchase before you make up your mind. Rack size and length-of-stay are two of the factors that need to be considered before making a bicycle parking rack purchase. |
| Rack Size: |
| An improperly sized bicycle parking rack will do more harm then good. If the rack is too small, it will result in damage to itself and the bicycles alike. If the rack it too large, it might not fully secure the bicycles, completely defeating its own purpose. It is important to choose not only the right size rack for multiple bicycles, but also the right size rack to fit in your location. For example, only 50% of a double sided rack is used if it needs to be placed along a wall. |
| Length of Stay: |
| Depending on how long a patron plans to stay on your location determines what their needs are in bicycle parking. |

Short-Term Parking (1-20 minutes) |
| Guest who are interested in short term bicycle parking have very specific needs. Usually, their main goal is keeping their bicycle upright. Next, it is likely that they are looking to lock their bicycle on anything stationery; be it an actually bicycle rack, or a small tree, these cyclists are simply looking for something to latch onto. They are usually satisfied with any kind of bicycle rack because they are only going to be away from their bicycle for a short period of time. They are typically close enough to their bicycle to see it during the duration of their stay; therefore, theft isn’t a main concern. |
Medium-Term Parking (21-60 minutes) |
| Individuals looking for medium-term parking have a varying set of needs. Keeping their bicycle upright is important, but keeping their bicycle locked is even more important. These cyclists usually desire an actually bicycle rack, and not just a stationary object, to secure their bicycle. Theft is a minor concern for these bikers because they are sometime gone long enough for a bike bandit to steel their bicycle. Most medium-term parkers try to lock both the frame and the wheels of their bike for added security. |
Long-Term Parking (Over an hour) |
| Long-term bike parkers have the most defined set of desires. They are almost completely concerned with bike security, from both theft and damage. The ideal location for these cyclists would be somewhere with more than just a simple bike rack. It’s likely that these bikers won’t park anywhere that doesn’t provide closing lockers, isn’t a restricted access facility, or that isn’t constantly watched by a hired guard. These bicyclists should also be willing to use indoor bicycle parking racks, if they can lock their bike to the rack and lock the door of the facility. |
